Dog Hit By Car Makes Incredible Recovery At CARES

Blog

“It was just horrible,” recalls pet owner Helen Bednarczyk. Her dog Penny was hit by a car, while crossing the street on a leash, after an SUV came speeding by. “I almost had a heart attack and the driver never stopped,” adds Helen.

Penny Comes to CARES

Helen took Penny, a 3-year-old Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix to the Center for Animal Referral & Emergency Services (CARES), in Langhorne, where emergency services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. “Penny never cried or whimpered. She kept licking her paw and there was a lot of blood,” Helen says. Upon arrival at CARES, Helen was impressed by the quick response she received. “CARES was great and took her right away,” she adds.

Radiographs showed multiple fractures in Penny’s front legs, paws and in her lower jaw. She underwent surgery with CARES Board Certified Veterinary Surgeon, Dr. David Puerto. Dr. Puerto repaired Penny’s front left leg with surgery and a bone plate. Penny’s right front leg was treated with a splint. Her jaw was repaired with dental bonding and wire between the teeth. “Oh I love him, he was the greatest,” exclaims Helen regarding Dr. Puerto. “He was so kind and caring and kept me informed the whole time.”

Penny Gets More Great Days With Family

Penny spent 3 nights at CARES with around the clock care. Her recovery from surgery went smoothly and today Penny is doing great! She’s back to playing in the yard, where she loves to play catch and hang out with her furry brother Max! As for the doctors, nurses and staff at CARES, Helen is so grateful to them all! “Everybody just loves Penny. They couldn’t be kinder and nicer to her. I don’t have the words to tell you how wonderful they are!”
